President Theodore Roosevelt brought a boldness and excitement to our nation’s highest office, urging Americans to dare greatly, strive valiantly and be “in the arena.”
Today, thanks to the vision and passion of so many from North Dakota and beyond, a bold tribute to our 26th president is rising from the beautifully rugged Badlands where, he said, “the romance of my life began.”
The TR Presidential Library in Medora has raised over $270M in private donations, well above the $100M originally required to trigger a $50M state endowment to help fund library operations and maintenance. That $50M remains in state hands as it generates investment earnings, and the library is on track for a grand opening on July 4, 2026, our nation’s 250th birthday.
Those who visit the library will draw inspiration from the bold and courageous life Roosevelt lived, including his time in the Badlands. It will be framed around pillars of TR’s legacy: citizenship, leadership and conservation.
We’re deeply grateful to the Legislature, private donors, the Roosevelt family, local officials, library board members and leadership – everyone who has dedicated their time, resources and passion to honoring the incredible leader who declared, “I have always said I would not have been President had it not been for my experience in North Dakota.”
