Mayor Trent Staggs
Letter to Riverton Residents: My Decision Not to Seek Re-Election
After 12 years of service – four on the council and eight as your Mayor – I believe I have delivered on my promises. From improving water quality, establishing our own police department, cutting taxes by tens of millions of dollars, keeping the lowest fees in the valley, and driving unprecedented economic development, infrastructure improvements and resident engagement, Riverton City is on a solid foundation.
I also believe in term limits, and that the biggest threats to our liberty and quality of life come from other layers of government. For those reasons, Alisha and I decided some months ago that I would not seek re-election this fall as your Mayor.
I’ve placed my confidence in the Riverton voter these past 12 years, and you have generously responded by placing your confidence in me. During that time, I’ve been blessed to have the support of my family, and lead on the following accomplishments, working with great council members and city staff:
• Public Safety: Improved service levels while saving over $21M in property taxes.
• Taxes and Fees: Saved over $23M in property taxes by switching to our own police and fire tax districts and innovated to keep the lowest fees in the valley.
• Balanced Growth: Standing up against the imposition of high-density housing and losing local control from our state and county officials.
• Economic Development: Attracted Mountain View Village, Costco, and the addition of some 3 million sq ft of commercial business, increasing sales tax revenue from $4M to nearly $13M.
• Liberty: Defending liberty, opposing all mandates and lockdowns during COVID.
• Resident Engagement: Drove the creation of our communications department, social media, volunteer committees, and citizen surveys.
• Infrastructure Improvements: Accelerated the timeline of the Bangerter Interchanges with state officials, secured funding for trails, updates to city hall and our civic center, monument signage, significant improvements to our culinary water from the well water we had pre-2015.
• Looking Ahead: In 2025, we will see the addition of restaurant and retail to our old downtown area around city hall and our park, major infrastructure improvements finishing the Bangerter interchanges, the Welby canal trail, a pedestrian bridge over 13400 S at that canal, and a reverse osmosis plant that will keep water rates low.
Thank you again for the opportunity to serve and for your continued support throughout this year. I look forward to seeing who will be willing to step up and file in June to serve as our next mayor, and hope to support someone who can carry on from these past 12 years.
