Julie Delpy returns to Tribeca with her latest film, a moving and devastatingly visceral tale of parenthood. Delpy stars as an ambitious scientist, Isabelle, one half of an estranged couple with James (Richard Armitage) that tenuously co-parents its beloved child, Zoe, in Berlin. When the unthinkable happens and the intensely at-odds former spouses are forced to work together in the interest of their child, their dynamic explodes in resentful accusations and fury. Isabelle, unable to accept the reality of her daughter’s situation, turns to exceedingly extreme and dangerous measures to keep Zoe in her life.
In this challenging but fascinating hybrid of drama and science fiction, audiences are treated to Delpy’s newest exploration of modern relationships—the eternal tie of parent and child. Giving bitingly brilliant performances as a couple whose former passion has transmuted into a storm of bitterness, Delpy and Armitage are joined by Daniel Brühl and Gemma Arterton as a Moscow-based couple whose commitment to helping Isabelle find peace push the limits of science and what many consider human nature.—Liza Domnitz
